Punggol is now Slumggol
SINGAPORE: When Andy Ke moved into his new Build-to-Order (BTO) flat in Punggol early in 2024, he never imagined he would be dealing with a rubbish situation for months to come.
Photos shared by the 41-year-old resident of the Punggol Point Cove estate along Punggol Way showed large cardboard boxes and plastic sheets dumped at a walkway.
When CNA visited the block in question on Wednesday (Jun 12), there were similarly several large cardboard boxes as well as wooden frames left at a basement car park, despite a sign warning that illegal dumping would come with a S$1,000 fine.
Mr Ke, a director at a logistics company, said that from when he first noticed the waste, it took only a month for it to become a "mountain" almost touching the ceiling.
"I (couldn’t) take it any more. I feel that something must be done. Someone must say something about it," said…

The Straits Times understands the hotel is the Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong, which is located in Katong Square.

The shambolic state of affairs plaguing the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) EXPOSED!
The Football Association of Singapore’s internal review into the 2023 Southeast Asian Games disaster should well paint a grim and dark picture of the state of the game in Singapore.
And hopefully that helps them take action decisively.
Portions of the review, seen by TMSG through our sources, indicate that an overhaul of the national football body may well be in order.
TMSG is making this information gathered public so that the people in charge will be accountable, especially given that the national football body has itself convened the internal review following the disastrous SEA Games outing.
Our intent is simple: provide as accurate as possible an unadulterated picture of what led to Singapore’s shocking implosion at the SEA Games where the Young Lions, led by national U23 head coach Philippe Aw, finished rock bottom in terms of performance, returning with only a single point after a draw with Laos.

Elderly man died in shop house, corpse discovered only after bodily fluids seeped through floor and into the unit below

2 seniors found dead alone in Bedok North & Ang Mo Kio flats on same day

A 66-year-old man was found dead alone in his home at Block 554, Bedok North Street 3, after neighbours noticed a foul odour emanating from his flat for days.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the body was found on the block's 10th floor on Jun. 13.
Neighbours told the media that the smell first became noticeable on Jun. 11.
One resident recalled not seeing any laundry hanging outside the deceased man's home for two days, which she found unusual.
She also initially thought that something had rotted in her home, but was unable to find the source of the smell.
Another neighbour said he last interacted with the deceased two weeks before his death.
He was in good spirits, and there was nothing out of the ordinary then, he added.
However, some neighbours reportedly described the deceased man as someone who lived alone and did not speak much to others.
He was sometimes seen buying food downstairs and was known as someone who liked to grow flowers and plants and rear fish.
According to Shin Min, the police said they received a call for assistance at about 5:50pm on Jun. 13.
A 66-year-old man was found unconscious in his unit and pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings ruled out homicide, and further investigations are underway.
Second death in a day
On the same day, an elderly woman believed to have been living alone in her flat at Block 508, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 was found dead.
Neighbours called the police after noticing a smell, Shin Min reported.
The body was found by police on the third floor of the block, where neighbours said they had smelled the odour since Jun. 12.
The woman had lived in the unit for at least six years, said a neighbour.
She was known to keep her house door shut and rarely interacted with neighbours, though she was frequently seen alone below the block.
A neighbour, 101, told the media that the deceased woman had an elder brother who resided in a nursing home.
It was not clear if he had been notified of his sister's death, she said.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed it received a call for assistance at about 10:20pm on Jun. 13, according to Stomp.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He kept vomiting blood, and no one dared to move him", Man dies after allegedly falling from height in Tiong Bahru Plaza

Shoppers at Tiong Bahru Plaza last Friday (Jan 27) were horrified after a man allegedly fell from height at around 3pm.
The deceased was a man in his 20s or 30s, Shin Min Daily News reported.
Several people working at the mall told the Chinese evening daily that they heard a loud sound and later saw a man lying on the ground floor.
"He kept vomiting blood, and no one dared to move him," one of them said.
Another eyewitness surnamed Huang shared that a woman working in the vicinity took out a first-aid kit and tried to help the man.
Expect many more suicides by S'poreans who are no longer able to cope with the spiralling costs of living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. A whole lot more will inevitably see no way out of their predicaments, mark my words.
[GPGT] NTUC Fairprice is starting to lock up baby formula 🥺

FairPrice locks up infant formula on shelf of supermarket outlet in trial to stamp out theft
SINGAPORE — Supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice has put up locks on shelves displaying infant formula in one of its stores as a trial to prevent theft.
In response to queries from TODAY, a FairPrice spokesman said on Wednesday (Jan 18) that it started the trial at its Bukit Batok MRT Station outlet as infant formula is “a common item that is typically shoplifted”.
“This trial started two weeks ago and we continue to assess the feasibility of continuing or extending this initiative,” it said.
It added that the trial complements various other security measures it has put in place, including close-circuit television cameras and plain clothes security officers to deter shoplifting.
On Tuesday, a Twitter user by the name of Shawn Lim had tweeted a photo of the locked displays.
CNA reported on Wednesday night that at least another outlet — in Boon Lay Shopping Centre — had a similar plastic screen with lock.
Consumers buying infant formula and certain beauty products have to ask supermarket staff to unlock the screens to obtain the items, CNA's report added.
TODAY has reached out to FairPrice on this and to ask about figures on theft of infant formula.
TODAY checked out three FairPrice outlets at Yew Tee and Pasir Ris on Wednesday and did not see any one of them which secured formula milk behind screens.

PropertyLimBrothers co-founder Melvin Lim serving as non-salaried director
Melvin Lim, co-founder of PropertyLimBrothers (PLB), is currently serving as a "non-salaried director" at the real estate firm.
Lim was embroiled in an alleged extra-marital affair with Grayce Tan, PLB's then vice-president, and both resigned in January after an internal review.
It was reported that Tan has joined OrangeTee, another real estate agency.
Based on the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA) website, Lim is registered with PLB.
The website shows that his PLB registration began over a month ago on May 29 and will be in effect till Dec 31.
In response to media queries, PLB told Stomp that Lim's CEA salesperson registration is "separate" from any executive or public-facing operational role within the business.
At the same time, he is "not seeking any public-facing return" after stepping down from the company, and his primary focus remains on his "family and personal recovery", reported Stomp.
Based on AsiaOne's checks, Tan has resumed posting on her social media page, Homes with Grayce, since June 12, though Lim's accounts remain private.
Following Lim and Tan's resignations in January, PLB also conducted layoffs and axed a number of roles at its media arm PLB Media in April.
AsiaOne has reached out to PLB for additional information.
