The massacre began in Singapore, where somewhere between 5,000. Japanese estimates, and 100,000, Singaporean estimates, ethnic Chinese civilians were killed at various places in the region. The operation was overseen by the Kempeitai and subsequently extended to include the Chinese population in Malaya. The majority of Singaporean Chinese were Hokkien.
