Anything to make MINDEF look less culpable. If the casualty wasn't a high profile celebrity the whole incident might have been swept right under the carpet. Just look at the homecoming ramp ceremony....the whole affair look unproperly rehearsed, if anything it bordered on sloppy.
After his despicable antics, he insincerely tries to soothe the angry public, further imploring them by threat of law not to embark on a witch hunt and harass his family members.
At the time of writing, this petition has garnered more than 3,000 signatures since it was launched about a day ago - a clear sign of the furore Singaporeans feel towards Zaobao reporter Hong Ming Hua’s actions and behaviour.
This petition gained significant traction despite an apology that Hong Ming Hua wrote on his Instagram page. This shows that Singaporeans feel that his apology is hardly a guarantee that anything will change. In his apology, he tries to shift a big portion of the blame on being caught in a sensitive situation, rather than apologise over the timing of his messages or his choice of words, things he had full control over.
On behalf of all the signatories, we hope that SPH and Lianhe Zaobao would take a stand on this matter, and not simply sweep this issue under the rug by keeping mum about the situation and letting it blow over.
By remaining silent on this matter, Lianhe Zaobao and SPH are implicitly condoning this reporter's actions. Comments left on the petition page and on social media indicate that this is hardly the first time this reporter has resorted to underhand, questionable means in an attempt to get the latest scoops.
If no actions were to be taken against Hong Ming Hua or his superior who approved of this approach, there is no doubt that everything will simply go back to the status quo once the dust settles - that this sort of harassment will simply continue, just on different unfortunate targets.
Is this the signal Lianhe Zaobao and SPH are communicating? That such errant behaviour would be tolerated, accepted and even condoned by Singapore’s largest news outlet?
We hope that SPH and Lianhe Zaobao would take a stand on this matter and publish a response on this.
Disciplinary action for Zaobao reporter (who harassed Jayley Woo) & his editor
Singaporeans woke up to the devastating news on 24 January that local actor Aloysius Pang had passed away while on reservist in New Zealand. While his friends and colleagues were still reeling from shock and posting heartbreaking tributes on social media, Aloysius's girlfriend Jayley Woo, and her twin sister Hayley Woo, both local actors, were pestered, harassed and coerced into granting an interview with Chinese paper Lianhe Zaobao reporter Hong Ming Hua.
Judging from the barrage of angry comments left on Hong Ming Hua's Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/hongmenyan/), I can safely say that I am not alone in feeling the outrage from seeing this reporter absolutely overstepping the boundaries of professional journalism.
This is straight up harassment. Saying things like:
"This is the price that a public figure has to pay",
"A person only dies once",
"You sure you are suited to be a celebrity with this mindset?", and
"But if in the end it’s because you didn’t handle this properly and it becomes an unfavourable consequence.it shouldn’t be the sole responsibility of the media. You are responsible too"
is emotional blackmail, pure and simple. It shows the absolute lack of empathy this reporter has - traits that reporters, of all people, should demonstrate when covering sensitive stories such as these.
Hong Ming Hua later apologised on his Instagram page, but he clearly did so with no remorse, and only because he was called out by hundreds of angry and outraged Singaporeans.
Will he get away scot-free after what he has done?
By remaining silent on this matter, Lianhe Zaobao and SPH are implicitly condoning this reporter's actions, and if no actions were to be taken against Hong Ming Hua, there is no doubt that this reporter will continue to pursue such underhand, despicable tactics in his pursuit of so-called 'journalism'.
If he stands by his actions, then he should also be prepared to face the consequences.
Please consider signing this petition to make it clear to Lianhe Zaobao and SPH that Singaporeans are disgusted, and absolutely do not condone such behaviour by reporters. I ask that SPH please lead by example and show us Singaporeans that our country's journalism standards are better than this.
(P/S: If you are asked to contribute money after signing this petition, do note that this money is being requested by Change.org, and all proceeds will go to them. The purpose of this movement is for action to be taken, not to raise funds. No one requires any money for this. Your willingness to sign this petition and share it with your family and friends is sufficient and would be most appreciated. Thank you!!)
Crowds build as Aloysius Pang's wake opens to fans and members of the public
SINGAPORE — An hour before the wake for Corporal First Class (CFC) Aloysius Pang was opened to the public on Saturday (Jan 26), a queue of about 10 fans had begun to form outside, patiently waiting their turn to pay their respects to a favourite actor.
A teary-eyed fan, 49-year-old Angeline, was first in line.
“Aloysius was a talented young man. I’ve seen his shows and can’t believe he passed away just like that. He was just doing his part.”
CFC Pang lost his life on Wednesday while on reservist training in New Zealand, four days after he sustained major injuries to his internal organs after being crushed by the barrel of a gun inside a self-propelled howitzer.
The death of the 28-year-old has led to an outpouring of grieffrom fellow artistes and fans, who mourned a bright star gone too soon.
Inside the tentage at 82A Macpherson Lane, while it was still a private affair, somber music played as family and friends trickled in.
Among them were men from the 268th Battallion Singapore artillery, in which CFC Pang had served as an armament technician.
National Development Minister Lawrence Wong arrived around 9.30am, paid his respects and stayed until 10.15am to speak to CFC Pang’s family and friends. Member of Parliament (MP) for Macpherson Tin Pei Ling, who had already visited the family on Friday night, paid a second visit.
Two large LCD screens on either side of CFC Pang’s coffin replayed happy memories from his life – precious moments spent with friends, family, at work.
Body of Aloysius Pang brought back to Singapore, late actor to be accorded military funeral
Late actor Aloysius Pang will be accorded a military funeral before being cremated at Mandai Crematorium on Sunday (27 January), said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) in a statement.
Pang’s body was flown back on a Republic of Singapore Air Force KC-135R tanker aircraft from Auckland Airport, New Zealand, at around 7am (Singapore time) on Friday, and landed at Paya Lebar Air Base at around 6pm.
Pang was accorded due honours by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) through a homecoming ramp ceremony with Chief of Army Major-General Goh Si Hou in attendance, a Guard Of Honour and fellow soldiers of the Artillery Formation,
His family witnessed the ceremony, said Mindef.
Also present was Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen – accompanied by Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong – who met a family member of Pang’s to offer Mindef’s and the SAF’s condolences.
Public memorial might be held for Aloysius Pang, his family's 'precious'
SINGAPORE - A public memorial service is being considered for home-grown actor Aloysius Pang, who was viewed as "the precious" of his family.
Speaking to the media on Thursday night (Jan 24) after arriving in Singapore from New Zealand, the actor's second-eldest brother Kenny said: "He's the youngest, he's the most loved... we called him xiao gua tou (little melon head). And what you see on television and what you see in all the responses that he has been receiving - all the love and care - that is who he is.
"He's as caring, he's as devoted to his passion, so that is the true self of Aloysius. I think his main priority has always been his parents, his love for his parents, and that has not changed."
Mr Kenny Pang was accompanied by his youngest brother's talent manager Dasmond Koh, 46, at the Changi Airport to meet the media to address questions surrounding the actor's death in New Zealand.
They declined to say whether the parents and eldest brother have since returned to Singapore.
Mr Koh said there may be plans to hold a memorial service for the actor so that "all of his fans and loved ones can say goodbye".
SAF to lower training tempo to better focus on safety, armywide safety timeout in place
SINGAPORE - The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will be lowering its training tempo across all services, with the aim of giving commanders and troops the time and space to review its systems and process so as to focus on safety.
He said he has asked all services to review their training tempo, with a view to lower it to focus on safety for all personnel, including full-time national servicemen (NSFs) and operationally ready national servicemen (NSmen).
"What does this mean? This will take the form of lowering the duration, the intensity, the frequency of existing training, take some things out, to do training better at a more sustainable pace, to focus on safety. So all services will review this, lower their training tempo in the weeks ahead."
"This reduction of training tempo following the safety timeout will be enforced for as long as it takes for us to get it right. And we want to do it right, we want to do it safe for every activity, we want to do it right every time," added Lieutenant-General Ong.
He later gave the assurance that a lowered tempo would not affect SAF's operational readiness, as it would not involve those on operations and deployments.
At the briefing, he and Chief of Army Goh Si Hou, as well as other senior commanders, also shared details about the circumstances leading to the death of Corporal First Class Pang, 28, who was an NSman.
To put things in perspective, in the past 16 months alone, no less than 7 NSFs and 1 NSman have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the Nation in peacetime.
Despite numerous statements from MINDEF and Ministers and the many COIs commissioned, things don't seem to have changed much.
It is about time the Generals and Ministers took responsibility.
"– Jan 23, 2019: CFC (NS) Aloysius Pang, died from injuries sustained during a training accident, which happened during an SAF training exercise in New Zealand

Outpouring of grief as family, friends mourn actor Aloysius Pang
SINGAPORE — Earlier this month, he posted on Facebook that he was “off to serve our country” and would be doing his reservist for three weeks in New Zealand.
“May not be able to post much when I’m there so wait for my return yeah,” actor Aloysius Pang Wei Chong wrote on Jan 5 in a mix of English and Chinese.
He sustained his injuries on Jan 19 while carrying out repair works inside the Singapore Self-Propelled Howitzer with two other Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel during a military exercise.
The announcement of his death triggered a swift outpouring of grief from Pang’s family and friends.
Posting on his Instagram account, his family sought the public’s understanding that it would be unable to comment further during this period.
Pang’s parents and brothers flew to New Zealand after news of his injury.
The past few days have been difficult, the family said. The news they received since his last operation have been
“devastating”, with “little signs of hope on his recovery”, they said.
“We all broke down when the medical team spoke to us that his condition is worsening and we should be prepared for the worst. We are going to lose a brother. And my parents are going to lose their precious son (who) is only 28,” the family wrote.
His girlfriend, actress Jayley Woo, posted a poignant farewell on her social media accounts.
Writing in Chinese and English, Ms Woo expressed her love for Pang and thanked him for taking care of her in recent years.
“You’ll always be a part of me, my man. We’ll meet in our next lives, till death do us part baby boy,” she wrote.
In an Instagram story, Ms Woo said that the couple had wanted to go public with their relationship only when they got married.
National broadcaster Mediacorp as well as NoonTalk Media, media company representing Pang, also responded to news of his death. The latter said that the actor would be missed and changed its Facebook cover photo to black.
Mediacorp issued a statement conveying its deepest sympathies to Pang’s family.
The actor grew up with Mediacorp, starting his career as a child actor in television dramas in 1999, it said.
He was named one of the "8 Dukes of Caldecott Hill" in 2014, awarded Best Newcomer at the Star Awards 2015 and became one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes at the Star Awards 2016.
Over the years, Aloysius matured as an actor and was recently cast in the lead role of future Channel 8 drama My One in a Million, Mediacorp said.
“Aloysius was much loved by all who worked with him and extremely popular with fans. He was a highly capable actor who had grown in skill and versatility but remained humble, diligent and ever willing to help others,” Mediacorp said. “He will always be remembered for his good-heartedness, his sincere, unaffected earnestness and his professionalism. He showed respect to everyone, especially his elders.”
The broadcaster said that it will do all it can to support Pang’s family, friends, fans and those who worked with him during this period.
SAF will be making arrangements to fly his body back.
Mindef said that an independent Committee of Inquiry will be convened to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident.
Chief of Defence Force Melvyn Ong will chair a press conference on Thursday (Jan 24) to present preliminary findings.
Death of a Singapore Armed Forces Operationally Ready National Serviceman – CDF to chair press conference to present preliminary findings
Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Operationally Ready National Serviceman, Corporal First Class (National Service) [CFC (NS)] Pang Wei Chong, Aloysius passed away at 2045hrs on 23 January 2019 (SG time) at Waikato Hospital, New Zealand.
An Armament Technician from the 268th Battalion Singapore Artillery, CFC (NS) Pang was carrying out repair works inside the Singapore Self-Propelled Howitzer (SSPH) with two other SAF personnel on 19 January 2019 at Waiouru Training Area, New Zealand. Unfortunately, CFC (NS) Pang sustained injuries when the gun barrel was lowered. He was evacuated to Waikato Hospital, a regional trauma centre where he underwent a number of surgeries to treat his injuries.
Dr Teo Li Tserng, Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, was flown in to assist the New Zealand medical team tending to CFC (NS) Pang. Despite surgical attempts to repair damaged organs and putting him on artificial life support, CFC (NS) Pang succumbed to the injuries and passed away.
An independent Committee of Inquiry will be convened to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident. A press conference will be held on 24 January 2019 to present the preliminary findings and will be chaired by the Chief of Defence Force.
The SAF will be making arrangements to bring the body of the late CFC (NS) Pang back to Singapore.
The Ministry of Defence and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of CFC (NS) Pang and will continue to render assistance and support in their time of loss.

Chief of Defence Force Melvyn Ong revealed this move at a media briefing on Thursday (Jan 24), as part of measures being taken after Singaporean actor Aloysius Pang's death from injuries suffered during a military exercise in New Zealand.

On Wednesday (Jan 23), the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) announced that Corporal First Class (National Service) Pang has died, four days after he was seriously injured during a military exercise.
