Fake news: PAP plans long term.
A country with limited space has an optimum population which even Lee Kuan Yew had acknowledged in 2008:
PM Lee chose to ignore papa’s wisdom.
Under PM Lee’s got-easy-ways-to-economic-growth leadershit, 2008 saw a record population increase of 250,000. (Wikipedia)
According to the same MSM article**: “A year ago , the Government had announced that it is making plans to accommodate a population of 6.5 million people – up from the current 4.5 million – in the next 40 to 50 years.”
Like his predecessor Lau Goh who had ignored URA’s long-term plan for a 4 million population by 2031 earliest, PM Lee continued to ramp up population numbers by importing foreigners on a massive scale.
This helped to increase GDP numbers which ultimately justified humongous ministerial salaries. Including their MP allowance, even entry-level ministers were paid more than 2 million in tax dollars a decade ago.
In 2011, LKY (perhaps he was pissed with Loong running Singapore into the ground) disclosed to the public that his son was taking a shortcut: growing headcount to increase GDP.
But in 2013, as if to prove who was really boss, civil servants supported PM Lee with “A Sustainable Population for a Dynamic Singapore“. Target population: 6.9 million in 2030.
By 2015, Singapore’s population had exceeded LKY’s 5.5 million optimum population.
It’s no coincidence that everything has started breaking down: PM Lee’s folly has caused a huge strain on infrastructure.
To sum up PM Lee’s folly: 2007 – Government projected a population of about 6.5 million between 2047 and 2057. Infrastructure is constructed based on population projection. 2008 – LKY said 5.5 million was optimum population. 2008 – PM Lee achieved a record annual population increase of 250,000. 2010 – 5-year population increase = 811,000 vs 29,935 new HDB flats. (hundreds of thousands of work permit holders and PRs live in HDB flats, PRs alone increased from 386,000 to 541,000) 2013 – 6 year earlier projection of 6.5 million in 2047 to 2057 increased to 6.9 million and brought forward by at least 17 years to 2030. 2015 – Population at 5.535 mil. 2017 – Population at 5.612 mil.
Long-term planning by PM Lee and his ‘A’ team?
Even an idiot would have known that infrastructure needs for such a drastic population increase would require decades of planning: PAP had none.
For example, PM Lee’s ‘planning’ did not even take into account basic needs like housing. (HDB Statistics)
